Experiencing the joy of physical activity, sports training and competition bring out the best in each athlete and ourselves.
As many of us have experienced first-hand, competitive and non-competitive athletic endeavors are vehicles for friendship, teamwork, self-confidence and fun. When we participate in athletics, we ignore distinctions of age, race, socio-economic status, and other differences which keep us apart from each other.
Instead, we celebrate the achievement of personal and team goals.
For over 45 years, Special Olympics Hawai‘i has provided individuals with an athletic outlet, bringing children and adults with intellectual disabilities out from the shadows and into the spotlight.
The total estimated cost to build the Special Olympics Hawaii‘i Sports and Wellness Center is $11 million. Phase 1 of the campaign can be completed for under $8.4 million, and includes everything except the outdoor covered play court. The Special Olympics Hawai‘i Sports and Wellness Center will be built on 2.44 acres in Kapolei on Oahu, adjacent to the Kroc Center.
Special Olympics Hawai‘i’s goal for athletes is to develop essential sports skills, competition readiness and a level of health and fitness for successful participation in not only sports, but also their daily lives - whether attending school, engaging with family and friends, or performing in the workplace.
Beyond providing opportunities for self-esteem and achievement, Special Olympics uses sports to alter the very nature of our preconceptions of those with intellectual disabilities.
