The SOFit Program was created to address the generally poor physical fitness level of our athletes, which predisposes them to a myriad of health related diseases, and has gained support from HMSA's Go Campaign. The SOFit Program also strives to increase athlete knowledge in the realm of fitness and nutrition, as well as actually increase the physical fitness of our athletes. To best integrate our athletes into the popular culture of fitness, the SOFit Class was created. At the end of the SOFit Class, athletes will feel more competent to exercise in a gym setting and become more self-sufficient, thus reducing barriers between them and the fitness lifestyle of our society.
To help coaches, families and athletes learn more about SOFit and how to implement more fitness activities into their lives, Special Olympics Hawaii has created the following booklets. The Coaches' Handbook gives coaches more background information on nutrition and fitness and acts as a guide on how to implement SOFit into practices or how to encourage athletes to make healthy choices outside of practice. The Athlete Workbook prepares the athlete for the SOFit tests as well as provides a test and exercise log and goal setting worksheets.

SOFit Program
Special Olympics Hawaii is launching a statewide program called, SOFit. Athletes will be field tested in fitness. For participating in the testing, all athletes will receive a small incentive. For reaching higher fitness goals broken down into three levels of fitness (Select, Elite and World Class), athletes will receive level based incentives.
SOFit Class
In addition to this statewide program, Special Olympics Hawaii is creating a pilot SOFit Class. This class is a 10 week course filled with nutrition and fitness education. The class meets twice a week at a partnering fitness facility, for 45 minutes of fitness education on gym equipment and group exercise and 45 minutes of nutrition education. The class is composed of athletes and their partners, who will be their at home motivators.
