Special Olympics Hawaii provides services in many other areas than sports training and competition. Through the years, new initiatives have been developed by local programs, state programs, national programs and our athletes around the world.
Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs)
Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) offer athletes the opportunity to take active leadership roles both on and off the playing field through self-directed, meaningful participation in virtually any aspect such as serving on Boards of Directors, officiating competitions, or coaching other athletes.
Family Leadership and Support
Through its Family Leadership and Support (Ohana Task Force) initiative, Special Olympics offers families not just opportunities for sports, social interaction and fun, but also a much-needed support system.
Healthy Athlete
The Healthy Athlete initiative works to improve, through better health and fitness and analysis of appropriate data, each athlete's ability to train and compete.
MedFest
MedFest is a program that combines Health and Outreach. In order for athletes to participate in Special Olypmics, they must obtain a valid and current medical form from a doctor. MedFest helps athletes who have difficulty getting to a doctor to begin participation and helps renewing athletes' continuation in Special Olympics.
Schools & Youth Outreach
The Schools & Youth Outreach initiative encourages school-age youth to celebrate differences and break down barriers. Its efforts allow young people to discover the pathway toward building a more welcoming society for all.
Annual Leadership Conference
Special Olympics Hawaii provides an Annual Leadership Conference for our Families, Coaches, Athletes and Volunteers each February. This has become a valuable asset to our training programs.
