Since the first Special Olympics World Games were held in Chicago, Illinois, USA in July 1968, the event has grown to become one of the world's leading athletic events. Every two years, thousands of Special Olympics athletes from around the world come together to showcase their athletic skills and celebrate the spirit of Special Olympics. Alternating between Summer and Winter Games, the Special Olympics World Games is a world-class sporting event featuring intense competition and inspiring performances by the great athletes of Special Olympics.
In 2006 the first ever Special Olympics USA National Games was held in Ames, Iowa at Iowa State University from July 2-7, 2006. SOHI selected qualified athletes from the 2005 Summer Games and the 2005 Holiday Classic to represent Hawaii at the National Games. 3 Male Powerlifters, 4 Female Bowlers, and 1 Basketball team attended National Games.

The 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games will be held in Shanghai, China from October 2-11, 2007
The 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games was held in Nagano, Japan, on 26 February - 5 March. This showcase event marked the first time the World Winter Games was held outside of North America. 2 Hawaii athletes, Shannon Nakamoto and Howard Galariada represented Hawaii as part of Team USA in Speedskating. Howard brought home 2 Golds and 1 Silver Medal. Shannon brought home 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze Medal.

The 2005 Special Olympics Team USA consisted of approximately 200 athletes and 50 coaches representing all 50 United States and the District of Columbia at the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games. Worldwide, approximately 2,500 athletes, 650 coaches and official delegates, 10,000 volunteers, 28,000 family members and friends, and 150,000 spectators were in Japan to celebrate and be a part of the Games.
Over 3,500 Special Olympics Team USA family members and friends, including both Howard and Shannon's family, traveled to the Games to cheer for their athletes sharing in one of the biggest moments in their lives.
The 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games - 20 - 29 June in Dublin, Ireland - was the largest sporting event Ireland has ever hosted and the largest sporting event in the world in 2003. 13 athletes, 3 coaches and one staff member represented Hawaii as part of Team USA.
